Youth STEAM Summer Camp Photos

The Youth Committee, in conjunction with the John Perdew Legacy Project, hosted a two week youth STEAM camp from July 21st through August 1st, 2014 to allow the children to develop real world skills through arts and science. As part of the STEAM camp (an acronym for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) the children worked with artist Ashley Dopson, listened to speakers talk about topics such as banking and finances, college and technical schools, music, tie tying, vegetable harvesting, and bicycle safety. At the end of the two week camp the children received free bicycles thanks to a generous donor.

Westview Garden Harvest

Westview Garden Harvest

Westview neighbors were able to reap the Westview Community Garden’s first big harvest of the season – tomatoes, peppers, beans, okra, cucumbers, and fruit were picked.

Westview Pizza Café received all of the tomatoes, many of the peppers, some okra and a couple of cucumbers to incorporate into their menu. D Café used some cucumbers for their menu as well, and additional cucumbers were given away to a neighbor on South Gordon Street. Talk about truly local garden-to-table for our Westview restaurants!

Please join community members at the Westview Community Garden (1439 S. Gordon Street) every Saturday from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

2014 Westview Summer Solstice Celebration

Westview Summer Solstice Celebration 2014 Photos

The 7th annual Westview Summer Solstice Celebration took place on Muse Street, adjacent to the Atlanta BeltLine, and featured a grill-off competition between southwest Atlanta neighborhoods and businesses, vendors, music, and a celebration of life service for the late community activist John Perdew.

Eleven grillers battled it out for the title of “Best Pork” and “Best Chicken.” The neighborhoods that were represented included Adair Park, Beecher-Donnelly, Capitol View, Mechanicsville, two West End entries, and five Westview entries. The title of “Best Pork” went to the Adair Park neighborhood, and the title for “Best Chicken” went to last-minute write-in contestant 1600 from the Westview neighborhood.

Unfortunately 2014 marked the first year the festival would experience rain in its seven year course. While the crowds diminished during the rain, those that stayed seemed to have just of a good time as any year, and all participants expressed excitement for next year’s festivities.

Thank you to all the visitors who came out to enjoy the event, the sponsors that helped make the event possible, the grillers that battled it out for the best food, the vendors who sold a diversity of items, and last, but not least, the crew that put the event together! See you next year!

A full 27-mile loop and a half 16-mile loop were available; Westview received the honor of being a drive-through neighborhood for both tour options. In an effort to put the community’s best foot forward members of the Westview Community Organization came out to greet the visitors…and do some guerrilla advertising for the following weekend’s Westview Summer Solstice Celebration festival.

Westview Kids Enter Mellow Mushroom Contest

Westview residents thought it would be a fun idea to get some of the neighborhood children together to star in a 15-second video for an opportunity to win the grand prize and get them some new sports equipment to play with. See what they came up with!
