Westview Featured on Curbed

Westview In The Press

Westview received love from online real estate and neighborhood news outlet, Curbed, two days in a row!

The first article, published on June 5, 2014, titled “Historic Westview Exhibits Symptoms Of Beltline Fever,” shines a light on all the activities members of the Westview Community Organization are making happen in our beloved intown Atlanta neighborhood. Author Josh Green highlights our $40 homestead property taxes and multitude of available houses under $200k while pointing to the imminent construction of the Westside BeltLine trail (which comes straight through Westview).

In the second article, published on June 6, 2014, and titled “For Now, These Homes Near The Beltline Ask Less Than $200K,” author Kimberly Turner broadens the focus by not only highlighting Westview, but also a few nearby neighborhoods. The article showcases some of the affordable inventory available in southwest Atlanta and compares the quality to that of the much more pricey Eastside neighborhoods.

Thank you for the recognition, Curbed! We hope this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Westview and Curbed.

Featured Volunteer John

Featured Volunteer: John

John was born in Eatonton, GA, and moved to Atlanta in 1960. He worked at the Chevrolet Company when he was younger and eventually joined the U.S. Postal Service where he served as a walking postman in the Midtown neighborhood for 11.5 years, from which he is now retired.

John bought his home in Westview in 1968. His purchase was for practical reasons at the time, but he has since fallen in love with the neighborhood. Before getting involved with the Westview Community Organization John was active in the church choir at Mount Moriah Baptist Church at Lowery and Fair Street in the 1970s and 80s. Eventually John became involved with the Westview Community Organization where he served as President in 2008 and 2009, and he currently serves as the Chair of the Beautification Committee. When he joined the committee, the Chair at that time initially thought he was joking, but John has faithfully been mowing the Westview park triangles and participated in plantings ever since.

A few fun facts about John:

Garden Planting & Shed Construction

On Saturday, May 10th, community members came back together to continue work at the Westview Community Garden. Additional beds were prepared, kids received instructions on how to put plants in the ground, and construction-oriented neighbors continued work on the shed by adding a gutter to collect rain water. Also notice the still-in-progress artwork on the shed wall!

Creative Loafing Box at Big Apple Inn

Creative Loafing Box in Westview

Thanks to The Big Apple Inn you can now pick up the latest paper issue of Creative Loafing Atlanta at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. and East Ontario Ave. This is very exciting considering southwest Atlanta is somewhat underrepresented in Creative Loafing’s circulation list. And what better way for The Big Apple Inn to ensure readers are aware of the consistent press they receive! Thank you April for getting Creative Loafing to Westview.

$5 Million Private Donation Towards BeltLine Westside Trail

The $43 million Westside BeltLine Trail project is one step closer to its private funding goal thanks to the generous commitment of a $5 million donation from the philanthropic James M. Cox Foundation. The Atlanta BeltLine’s fundraising arm, the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, has a goal of receiving commitments of $10 million in private funds by July 2014. It is in large counting on donations from Atlanta’s business community, and as such the James M. Cox Foundation is setting the precedent for other philanthropic groups.

To learn more about this story read the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s article “Business leaders launch new $10 million fundraising campaign for Beltline.”

The Atlanta BeltLine is turning in its trail application to the Georgia Department of Transportation in June 2014, in July 2014 a contractor will be selected, and construction of the trail is scheduled to start around September 2014 with a completion timeframe, set by the federal government, of 2016. The Westview portion of the trail marks the middle of the path, with one end of the trail being marked by Washington Park and the other end of the trail being marked by Adair Park.

Westview Community Garden Spring Planting

Community Garden Spring Planting Photos

After a cold and long winter the night time temperatures have finally become mild enough to plant the seedlings in the community garden. And so young and old joined together to mow, till ground beds, and to start planting the first tomatoes, okra, bush beans, and peppers in the raised beds. The work is not done, but we’re excited to finally have the first set of plants in the ground!
