Southwest Atlanta Breweries

Southwest Atlanta is Atlanta’s New Local Craft Brewery Hub

Alright, perhaps we are getting ahead of ourselves, but two Atlanta-area breweries will soon call the Lee+White development in West End their second home. Two breweries side-by-side? Beer aficionados will be able to rejoice at this news!

Back in September 2016, Monday Night Brewery had announced that it will open up a second location called “the Garage” at the Lee+White development to focus on crafting their barrel-aged and sour beers. Part of the land next to the warehouse will be used to grow fruit trees, whose wild yeast will aid in the beer fermentation. The facility will include a tasting room and a patio for patrons to enjoy. Simultaneously it was announced that Honeysuckle Gelato, Doux South Pickles, Southern Aged cheese maker, and Relay bike-share would join the brewery in the development.

Now it has been announced that Avondale Estates-based brewery Wild Heaven would join Monday Night Brewery and the others at the Lee+White development to open up a second location as well. While Monday Night Brewery aims to open up later on in 2017, Wild Heaven will not open up until 2018. The brewery space will include a 10,000 square foot patio on the Atlanta BeltLine, as well as food made on-site.

And the beauty of it all? Westview neighbors will be but a short stroll down the Atlanta BeltLine from these new food and drink destinations – cheers!

Enota Park Goats

Enota Park Goats Meet & Greet

As the goats were eating their way through underbrush and overgrowth in the future Enota Park expansion land, neighbors and visitors were invited to come meet the goats, including 2-week old kid’s.

Goats in Enota Park

The Atlanta BeltLine has made the following announcement regarding Enota Park:

Future Enota Park – Invasive Plant Species Removal

Trees Atlanta has teamed up with Get Your Goat, a local company providing shepherd and goat grazing services, to help clear invasive ivy in the future Enota Park. Located between the current Enota Place Playlot and under-construction Westside Trail, the wooded area is currently covered with ivy and kudzu. The goats will be focused on a small area within the future park and are expected to consume that ivy within two weeks. Work is expected to take place over two weeks beginning on January 23, 2017.

Trees Atlanta will host a Greet the Goats event on January 28, 2017, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. but neighbors and guests are welcome to visit the goats at any time during park hours (6 a.m. – 11 p.m.). The grazing area will be located adjacent to the playlot to the north and northeast. The goats will be enclosed in an electric pet fence. Signs on the fence will provide safety precautions for spectators. Get Your Goat recommends that dog walkers keep their pets on a leash around the protective fence for safety.

Additional Project Background

Since September 2016, Trees Atlanta and many community partners have been working on a major restoration of Enota Park, a 12-acre greenspace in Southwest Atlanta. Mature hardwood trees, which cover much of the site, are considered a significant asset to the park because they represent a historic grove in a part of the city where tree canopy is spotty. These trees also provide a much-needed buffer to the adjacent I-20 highway borders the park on the north. Unfortunately, invasive species have overtaken much of the area, including high concentrations of privet, kudzu and English ivy. Trees Atlanta is removing six acres of invasive species, replanting native species to temporarily stabilize slopes and streambanks prior to the full buildout of the park which is being completed by Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.

Holiday Party & Market

Pop-Up Holiday Party & Market

A pop-up party and holiday market was held in the Westview Village. The festivities followed the annual Westview Community Organization’s holiday luncheon, providing neighbors another opportunity to gather in the evening over potluck food, libations, and browsing artwork, décor, and more, while listening to local DJ Earl The Third.

2016 Holiday Potluck Photos

On Saturday, December 17, 2016, the Westview Community Organization held its annual holiday potluck at Fire Station 17. Neighbors brought dishes to share with neighbors and enjoy each others company. Some of the fire fighters were able to join in for the festivities during the meal, and as is tradition, the leftover food was left for the fire fighters to enjoy at a later time.

Zoning Review Board

Westview Neighborhood Commercial District Is Approved

The Westview Neighborhood Commercial (NC) District, a project no less than eight years in the making, has become a reality when the Atlanta City Council voted to adopt the legislation at their December 5, 2016 meeting.

Westview neighbors first put the Master Plan and Neighborhood Commercial District projects on the agenda of the August 2008 Development Committee agenda. The next year and a half was spent researching other Atlanta master plans and neighborhood commercial districts, and finding grants to fund the required resident notifications about a planning workshop. The Neighborhood Foundation made it possible to hold the commercial district workshop in May 2010, which was led by Village Habitat Design and assisted by Development Committee members.

The outcome of the workshop was the Westview Master Plan, which was adopted by Atlanta City Council in 2001. The Neighborhood Commercial District was outlined in the master plan, and therefore ultimately helped the Westview Community Organization, Westview Commercial District Association, and City of Atlanta’s Office of Planning to work together to create the necessary zoning changes.

After a series of neighborhood meetings the legislation was introduced by Councilmember Cleta Winslow, and after the due process of coming before the Zoning Review Board (photo above), the Zoning Committee, and ultimately the Atlanta City Council, the legislation was approved to become Atlanta’s NC-15 district.

Google Fiber installation

Google Fiber Coming to Westview

Atlanta has been buzzing with excitement over the news that Google Fiber will be coming to the city. Comcast and AT&T-haters alike can rejoice that Google Fiber has been coming through the Westview neighborhood to work on adding this utility feature as an additional option. While Google has been hush about when exactly the service will start to be offered, neighbors can none the less be content knowing that the infrastructure is actively being installed.
