Historic Fire Station 17

Coffee House at Historic Fire Station 17

Historic Fire Station 17 at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Blvd and Cascade Avenue will soon house a West End neighbor-run coffee house. Please see the information directly from them:

People of the Way of Jesus will offer a COFFEE HOUSE as a community service. We are renting the old Firehouse #17 at 1384 Ralph David Abernathy, and will offer coffee (bold, medium and DCaf), tea, some wrapped pastries and WiFi on a DONATION basis.

At the present time, we will be open to the public on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm to 9pm, so you can stop in for that quick cup on your way home, on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm for that relaxing weekend wakeup carefully and slowly cup and on Sundays from 9am to Noon for that “easy like Sunday morning” cup with your paper.

Our People of the Way Worship will still be held at 3pm on Sundays there, with our Agape Meal.

We also plan to offer FIRST FRIDAYS from 7 to 9pm, with Movie Nights, Spoken Word nights, live local musician nights and other activities.

We will not serve food, but you can pick some up and bring it in to enjoy (We recommend D’s Café down the street, Q Time, Soul Vegetarian, Bakari Pizza and other locally owned restaurants). We will not offer “to go” cups, but will be glad to fill your travel mug for you. It is all on a donation basis, and your donations will provide the rent, utilities, insurance, HVAC costs, WiFi and supplies to keep this going. We will not make profit on this, but will invest all donations into it, and expand it as those donations dictate ability to do so. It will be a community effort.

We will have our GRAND OPENING on Saturday, October 24th from 9am to 3pm, with a dedication ceremony at 11am. Rev. Jacqui and Pastor Jamie open our hearts and this coffee house to you!

If you have comfy chairs, area rugs, bookshelves or children’s chairs and tables, or children’s books you would like to donate toward this community service, or anyone who has a PowerPoint projector on which to show movies, that we can BORROW periodically… please contact Jamie at 404-353-0387.

Michael Jones Art Mural

Michael Jones Mural Commences

In February the Westview Community Organization (WCO) had the opportunity to apply for an art grant from the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. In turn the WCO approached artist Michael Jones, a Westview resident, to work on a project that could be enjoyed by the public. With the permission of the property owner it was decided to put a mural at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Blvd and East Ontario Avenue. After going through all the proper channels required to put up a public mural in the City of Atlanta Michael Jones was finally able to commence on the project on July 8th. The project work will span over the course of approximately 8 weeks.

To learn more about Michael Jones read about the art auction he participated in December 2014, and check out his artist website, 75 Mixed Medium.

Westview Leadership

Executive Committee Leadership Change

The Westview Community Organization’s (WCO) President, Ayana Gabriel, stepped down from her position on June 30, 2015. Before her Presidency term from 2012-2015, Ayana had served as Vice President in 2011, and Special Events Committee chair prior to that.

Per the WCO’s bylaws the Vice President assumes the role of the President until the next regular election cycle, which will take place in December 2015.

The Vice President, Octavia Vogel, who has been in her role since 2014, will now resume the role of President through 2015.

During the special June 30th meeting the WCO’s Executive Committee held a special election, per the bylaws, to fill the Vice President position. Jacinta Williams, who previously held the Assistant Treasurer position, was elected to fill the role of Vice President through 2015.

Additionally, the recently vacated Zoning and Code Enforcement Committee Chair position was appointed to Jay Scott.

On Saturday, June 20, 2015 the Westview Community Organization hosted the 8th annual Westview Summer Solstice Celebration. The event, which was hosted along Muse Street in recent years, was moved to the Westview Village business district along Ralph David Abernathy Blvd for 2015. The shut down road allowed festival visitors to take over the street, enjoy the delicious food being prepared by the “Best of the BeltLine BBQ” grill-off competitors, browse the artist market, and socialize with one another.

Westview Community Garden

Neighbors Rally to Save Community Garden

The idea of the Westview Community Garden first came to fruition in December 2009 when neighbors were presented with an opportunity to turn a wide vacant lot on South Gordon Street into a community garden. After the Westview Community Organization signed a 3-year lease with the owner plans were started for the 2010 growing season.

The original concept of the garden was for community members to purchase a plot for the year, allowing each plot owner to be in charge of their own area and what was grown. A separate area was designated for shared land so that crops that would perform better in groups, such as corn, could be grown for everyone. The participating gardeners held work days to till the land and build raised beds, and additional work days were held throughout the year to work on keeping the common areas clean.

Over time an emphasis was placed on needing to work with neighborhood youth to teach them where food comes from, how to garden, and providing a sense of pride for their accomplishments when vegetables and fruits were ready to be harvested. In turn the garden took a shift from the individual plot concept to a shared community garden concept where everyone would work in the garden and could enjoy the crops.

The gardeners additionally worked to receive grants to build a garden shed and a chicken coop (it should be noted the plans never materialized to the point of chickens being at the garden), hosted various volunteer groups for garden maintenance, a rain barrel workshop, and were featured in the BeltLine newsletter and as a stop on bicycles tours of Atlanta-area gardens.

While the community garden continued to function, a series of unfortunate background events occurred that would lead to the sudden and surprising end of the garden in March 2015. The owner with whom the community had signed the lease passed away in 2012. After the lease expired at the end of 2013 the community unsuccessfully attempted to contact the heir to renew the lease, and hence the community continued to garden on the land as “tenants at sufferance” (i.e. continuing to occupy the space with an expired lease but without being asked to leave by the owner). Unbeknownst to the gardeners the property fell into foreclosure in April 2014 and was taken over by Capitol City Bank. Capitol City Bank would collapse in February 2015, leaving the FDIC to take over the bank’s assets, including the Westview Community Garden. Community members became aware of the situation when a “No Trespassing” signed appeared in the garden at the beginning of March, followed by a bulldozer at the end of March.

Thanks to the swift action of alert neighbors, members were able to rally and jump into action and salvage the majority of the garden shed. A vote was taken at the April Westview Community Organization meeting to raise the funds for the community to officially acquire the land. The community is currently in negotiations with the FDIC to buy the land. If successful, a fundraiser will be held to raise the money to pay for the land, officially making the garden a community owned asset.

We hope our next article about the garden will be a positive one with a happy ending.
