2009 Fall Clean-Up

Fall Clean-Up Photos

This Saturday the Westview Community Organization partnered up with KIPP STRIVE Academy to clean and beautify quadrant one of Westview – Lucile Avenue, Enota Place, Altoona Place, Mathewson Place, Inman Street, and Wellington Street. One of the main battles of the community are vacant overgrown houses owned by banks or negligent investors. The properties become unsightly and attract illegal dumping. In an effort to beautify the neighborhood and show that this activity is not acceptable in Westview neighbors and students cleaned up trash, hauled away furniture, mowed lawns, and trimmed landscape strips. As a reward for all the hard work lunch was provided by Church’s Chicken. Westview would also like to thank neighbors from West End that came to out to help.

Trees Atlanta Lucile Avenue

Trees Atlanta Photos

On Saturday, October 24th Trees Atlanta was once again generous enough to focus their attention on Westview. Volunteers from outside the neighborhood and the community itself spent the morning planting trees along Lucile Avenue between the village center at Ralph David Abernathy and the neighborhood edge at Langhorn.

Additional photos can be viewed at Westview’s Facebook group.

Trees Atlanta Planting

Trees Atlanta will be back in the Westview neighborhood on Saturday, October 24th at 9:00am to plant approximately 52 trees on Lucile Avenue. There will be two kinds of service berries in the street row and a few cedars will be planted as end caps. Westview neighbors are encouraged to participate in this beautification effort in their community!

Fall Clean-Up/Beautification

The weather is turning cold, the leaves are changing colors, and it is time for Westview’s next neighborhood event!

On November 7, we will be having the first of four neighborhood clean-up and beautification days. I am so excited to announce that we will be hosting this clean-up in conjunction with KIPP STRIVE Academy, the new charter school located in the J.C. Harris building on Lucile Ave. This will be KIPP STRIVE’s first Saturday community service day with approximately 95 students and 20 adults participating! After the clean-up, we will be having a lunch for all participants.

As in the past, we need neighbors to come together to make this day a success. There are a variety of ways you can help. Please check out our “How You Can Help” list below, and contact me by next Monday (October 19th) to let me know your interest.

How You Can Help

1) Street Captains – We are focusing on quadrant 1 of westview which includes all streets below. We need at least one volunteer from each street to make a list of all work you would like to happen on the day of the clean-up. For example, your street may have a vacant house whose lawn needs to be trimmed, or a dumping area where tires need to be picked up. You will be responsible for collecting that information, and helping to get neighbors on your street to participate in the clean-up. Thanks for those neighbors who have already volunteered!

Muse – ?
Altoona – Mr. Gambrell
Matthewson – ?
Inman – ?
Enota Place – ?
Sells Ave – ?
Wellington – Shawnika and Kel
Laurel – ?

2) Phone Tree – Many of our neighboors are not on email. We need 2-3 neighboors who can be responsible for calling these neighboors so they may stay informed of this event.

3) Volunteers – Since KIPP STRIVE will be providing ~ 120 volunteers, we need to have as many neighbors helping as possible! We need persons who can haul heavy trash in pick-ups, volunteer to mow lawns of vacant homes, and of course, people to pick up trash. We also need people who can help setup and serve food at the lunch.

RDA Commercial Corridor Improvement

RDA Commercial Corridor Improvement

Little by little the Westview Community Organization is working on improving the neighborhood. A recent project included the commercial corridor along Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. Many neighbors envision a bustling commercial district with boutique shops offering unique clothing or where a glass of wine can be enjoyed over dinner with neighbors. The Atlanta Westview Holdings LLC has already played a large role in renovating some of the old structures and attracting new businesses, as well as building the newer loft development for residents; however the landscaping along this corridor hasn’t provided the most aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for pedestrians. Thanks to the hard work of the Westview Community Organization the previously out-of-control shrubs have been replaced by beautiful Princeton Elm trees in March. The trees have now filled in with leaves and already provide a much more attractive ambience for walkers.

Photography shows the streetscape prior to trees, the newly planted trees in March, and the filled in green trees in May.
