BeltLine Westside Trail at Lucile Avenue

Westside BeltLine Trail Land Acquisition

Last week Creative Loafing wrote an article about Invest Atlanta, the City of Atlanta’s economic development arm, voting to purchase the Westside Trail land from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) for $1.64 million. The Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail comprises of former railroad land that goes from Washington Park to Adair Park (including Westview!). The board’s vote to acquire the land puts the $43 million Atlanta BeltLine trail project one step closer to starting construction in the fall of 2014.

The Westside Trail is not to be confused with the existing West End/Westview spur trail going from the Westview Cemetery to Rose Circle Park, which was a project spearheaded in cooperation with the PATH Foundation. The new Westside Trail will be located inside the former train corridor and will include construction of a flat cemented path, lighting and surveillance cameras for security, benches for resting, and landscaping.

Exciting big development for Westview in 2014!

Westside Trail Design Open House

Westside Trail Design Open House Photos

On February 20, 2014 the Atlanta BeltLine hosted an open house for residents to view the architectural plans of the Westside Trail. The Westside Trail will span from Lena Street in the Washington Park neighborhood, through the Westview neighborhood, to Allene Avenue in the Adair Park neighborhood. The plans outlined locations of retaining walls, access ramps from the streets and neighborhood to the trails, and locations of proposed future transit stops. Construction for the trails are intended to start around September 2014 and will include preparations for the future transit portion, which is also set as part of the Phase I of future development.

Hadley Breckenridge Westview BeltLine Art

Westview BeltLine Art Featured on GSU Website

Georgia State University did a feature on their website about “Georgia State Artists Display Work Across Atlanta.” Hadley Breckenridge, an alumna of GSU, is one of the former students featured by the university for her artwork. Hadley participated in the Art on the BeltLine project three years in a row, all three of which can be found along Westview’s portion of the Atlanta BeltLine!

In 2011 her first piece, titled Enterchange, was painted along a retaining wall along Muse Street facing the Atlanta BeltLine. In 2012 she painted The Highball Artist on the Lucile Avenue bridge. In 2013 she revisited Enterchange by enlarging it to the remaining span of the retaining wall, as well as on the Muse Street facing wall.

To see Hadley Breckenridge and neighbors in action visit to the Westview Facebook page.
