Spring Clean-Up

Neighbors came together on Saturday, April 30th to clean up the community. The clean-up was additionally scheduled prior to the following weekend’s Westview Open House.

The Westview Community Organization would like to thank Councilman C.T. Martin for sponsoring the dumpster for the clean-up.

Fall Clean-Up

On November 6, we will once again partner with KIPP STRIVE Academy to pick up debris around our neighborhood. We will have over 100 students and parents of KIPP coming out to clean-up our neighborhood, we definitley want to have as many neighbors as possible to join them.

Lunch will be provided, courtesy of the staff of KIPP. We will focus on the streets listed below. Last year we saw that focusing on a few streets had a dramatic impact in one area. In the spring we will host a clean-up for another section of Westview.

Special thanks to neighbor Ken Carey for planning this entire event!

Tire Clean-Up

Tire Clean-Up

A group of Westview neighbors joined forces with Councilmember Cleta Winslow to clean up illegally dumped tires within the neighborhoods. Winslow sponsored a “tire amnesty” day to enable communities who have fallen victims to illegal tire dumpings to bring the tires to a designated location free of charge.

Illegal tire dumpings have become such a problem that even 11Alive came out to cover the story. Read the story and watch the video: Neighbor to Dumpers: ‘Shame on You’

Illegal Tire Dumping

Illegal Tire Dumping

Illegal tire dumping in southwest Atlanta neighborhoods has become such a nuisance that even the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has picked up a story (“Residents, businesses fed up with dumping ground”) about the problems. Thankfully there are two positive notes to add to this otherwise annoying topic:

For the short term: Councilmember Cleta Winslow is sponsoring a tire amnesty day on Saturday, February 27, 2010 from 9:00am to noon. Residents are asked to help pick up tires around the neighborhood and bring them to the drop-off site at the corner of Donnelly Avenue and Peeples Street in the Oakland City neighborhood. Westview residents will meet at 9:30am at Ontario Park to pick up tires in the community. Volunteers are appreciated!

For the long term: The AJC article indicates an illegal dumping hotline has been set up for this problem at 404-546-3867 or e-mail at nodump@atlantaga.gov.

2009 Fall Clean-Up

Fall Clean-Up Photos

This Saturday the Westview Community Organization partnered up with KIPP STRIVE Academy to clean and beautify quadrant one of Westview – Lucile Avenue, Enota Place, Altoona Place, Mathewson Place, Inman Street, and Wellington Street. One of the main battles of the community are vacant overgrown houses owned by banks or negligent investors. The properties become unsightly and attract illegal dumping. In an effort to beautify the neighborhood and show that this activity is not acceptable in Westview neighbors and students cleaned up trash, hauled away furniture, mowed lawns, and trimmed landscape strips. As a reward for all the hard work lunch was provided by Church’s Chicken. Westview would also like to thank neighbors from West End that came to out to help.

Additional photos can be viewed at Westview’s Facebook group.

2009 Tire Clean-up

Tire Clean-up

Illegal tire dumpings around the Westview neighborhood had become a serious nuisance over the last couple of months. So when Councilwoman Carla Smith and a number of commercial sponsors held an electronic waste and tire amnesty day on April 18th Westview neighbors Patrick Berry, Joe Gunby, Steffi Langer-Berry, and Scott Smith met up to de-litter the community. As a result Westview now has 61 less tires junking up the neighborhood!
