Signs recently popped up in the windows of the former Big Apple Inn spot advertising the soon-to-be opening of a new eatery – Night Train’s Wings and Things.

Cash Mob at Metro Lanes Bowling

Join us for the Intown SW Atlanta Cash Mob event series season wrap at Metro Lanes Bowling in Sylvan Hills on Friday, September 4th between 7:00pm and 11:00pm! Special community admission of $8 covers all activities (bowling, bowling shoes, skating, etc.).

What are Cash Mobs?

“Cash Mobs” are events in which we call on all neighbors to patronize a specific business on specific days and times. This shows the business owner the potential of increased business if they agree to adhere to some basic standards.

We all love our neighborhoods but how often do we find ourselves feeling like there are far too few high-quality restaurants and grocery stores nearby? In an effort to support local businesses and attract new food and restaurant businesses, neighborhood leaders of Adair Park, Capitol View, Capitol View Manor, Oakland City, Pittsburgh, Sylvan Hills, West End, and Westview are working together to encourage economic development in the area. As part of the Cash Mobs we are asking local food businesses to commit to:

1) Creating a respectful & welcoming environment for all patrons;
2) Maintaining a clean establishment;
3) Providing a safe environment (including shopping, dining, parking areas, sidewalks, etc.);
4) Providing healthy food options; and
5) Providing fresh food options.

If the establishments agree to these standards, we will ask our neighbors to go out of their way to support them.

Publicity

While patronizing the business neighbors are encouraged to:

1) Use hash tags ‪#‎iswatlcashmob‬ and ‪#‎intownsouthwestatl
2) Take photos while at the location or with their delivery
3) Post receipts of how much they spent

Westview Community Garden Fundraiser

Westview Community Garden Fundraiser, Art Auction and Dance Party

On Saturday, August 22 the Westview Community Organization hosted a fundraising party at Historic Fire Station #17 for the South Gordon Community Garden. As part of the fundraising efforts attendees were asked to donate a minimum of $50 for entry, which would include food and beverages, live DJ entertainment, and a silent auction.

Between the fundraising party and prior fundraising efforts via the GoFundMe campaign about 43% of the $10,000 goal has been reached.

Michael Jones Art Mural

Michael Jones Mural Commences

In February the Westview Community Organization (WCO) had the opportunity to apply for an art grant from the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. In turn the WCO approached artist Michael Jones, a Westview resident, to work on a project that could be enjoyed by the public. With the permission of the property owner it was decided to put a mural at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Blvd and East Ontario Avenue. After going through all the proper channels required to put up a public mural in the City of Atlanta Michael Jones was finally able to commence on the project on July 8th. The project work will span over the course of approximately 8 weeks.

To learn more about Michael Jones read about the art auction he participated in December 2014, and check out his artist website, 75 Mixed Medium.
