Westview Garden Harvest

Westview Garden Harvest

Westview neighbors were able to reap the Westview Community Garden’s first big harvest of the season – tomatoes, peppers, beans, okra, cucumbers, and fruit were picked.

Westview Pizza Café received all of the tomatoes, many of the peppers, some okra and a couple of cucumbers to incorporate into their menu. D Café used some cucumbers for their menu as well, and additional cucumbers were given away to a neighbor on South Gordon Street. Talk about truly local garden-to-table for our Westview restaurants!

Please join community members at the Westview Community Garden (1439 S. Gordon Street) every Saturday from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

2014 Westview Summer Solstice Celebration

Westview Summer Solstice Celebration 2014 Photos

The 7th annual Westview Summer Solstice Celebration took place on Muse Street, adjacent to the Atlanta BeltLine, and featured a grill-off competition between southwest Atlanta neighborhoods and businesses, vendors, music, and a celebration of life service for the late community activist John Perdew.

Eleven grillers battled it out for the title of “Best Pork” and “Best Chicken.” The neighborhoods that were represented included Adair Park, Beecher-Donnelly, Capitol View, Mechanicsville, two West End entries, and five Westview entries. The title of “Best Pork” went to the Adair Park neighborhood, and the title for “Best Chicken” went to last-minute write-in contestant 1600 from the Westview neighborhood.

Unfortunately 2014 marked the first year the festival would experience rain in its seven year course. While the crowds diminished during the rain, those that stayed seemed to have just of a good time as any year, and all participants expressed excitement for next year’s festivities.

Thank you to all the visitors who came out to enjoy the event, the sponsors that helped make the event possible, the grillers that battled it out for the best food, the vendors who sold a diversity of items, and last, but not least, the crew that put the event together! See you next year!

BeltLine Bike Tour through Westview 2014

BeltLine Bike Tour Photos

On Saturday, June 14, 2014, the Atlanta BeltLine hosted the Atlanta BeltLine Annual Bicycle Tour. A full 27-mile loop and a half 16-mile loop were available; Westview received the honor of being a drive-through neighborhood for both tour options. In an effort to put the community’s best foot forward members of the Westview Community Organization came out to greet the visitors…and do some guerrilla advertising for the following weekend’s Westview Summer Solstice Celebration festival.

Mellow Mushroom Contest

Westview Kids Enter Mellow Mushroom Contest

Mellow Mushroom recently announced an Instagram video contest. The grand prize is a 90-second shopping spree at Sports Authority (up to $2,000). To enter, you upload a 15-second video saying why you should win the prize.

Westview residents thought it would be a fun idea to get some of the neighborhood children together to star in a 15-second video for an opportunity to win the grand prize and get them some new sports equipment to play with. See what they came up with!

Infrastructure Bond Meeting

2015 Proposed Infrastructure Bond Public Information Meeting

Proposed Infrastructure Bond 2015
Mayor Kasim Reed has made a commitment to address the city’s pressing infrastructure challenges. Today, the city faces an infrastructure backlog of more than $900 million. In order to begin improving our city’s roads, bridges, sidewalks and expand our green spaces, the city is proposing a bond infrastructure referendum to pay for these repairs and improvements. The Departments of Public Works, Planning and Community Develop-ment, in coordination with the Atlanta City Council, are seeking public input to determine priority and criteria for project selection for the bond.
To that end, a series of information/community engagement sessions will be held throughout the city to solicit public input on what types of projects should be funded with the bond proceeds. An overview of the state of the city’s infrastructure and the referendum process will be included as part of the discussion. There will be three (3) rounds of public information meet-ings held between June 2014 and February 2015. Residents are invited to attend one or more of these sessions.

What is a Bond?
Bonds are investment opportunities issued by an entity that is authorized to sell bonds to investors. After the bonds are released into the market and investors subscribe to them, the proceeds are used to finance infrastructure projects. These developments include basic facilities and other projects. The facilities may include transportation and communication systems, and public buildings.

Why do an Infrastructure Bond?
Atlanta has aging transportation infrastructure: $881M is needed to restore and/or replace existing bridges, roads, sidewalks, street lights, signals and signs to good condition.

Atlanta has aging facility infrastructure: $130.8M is needed to restore and/or replace city facilities (fire stations, police stations, recreation centers, etc.) to good condition.

The decision will rest with the voters: The City of Atlanta recommends a diversified funding plan to address the infrastructure backlog that begins with a $250M general obligation bond to be presented to the voters in March 2015.

Inquiries related to the Proposed Infrastructure Bond may be sent to:
City of Atlanta
Department of Public Works
Office of Transportation Capital Projects.
