National Night Out

National Night Out 2014Join your neighbors, police, firemen and city officials on Tuesday, August 5th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm for food, music, and public safety awareness! The event will be held at the intersection of South Olympian Way and Waters Drive. There will be hotdogs, sodas, cookies, chips and water.

HISTORY
National Night Out, ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime,’ was introduced by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) in 1984 to prevent crime, drugs and violence in cities across America. That first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out. Nationwide, 2.5 million Americans took part in 1984. National Night Out now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Westview Garden Harvest

Westview Garden Harvest

Westview neighbors were able to reap the Westview Community Garden’s first big harvest of the season – tomatoes, peppers, beans, okra, cucumbers, and fruit were picked.

Westview Pizza Café received all of the tomatoes, many of the peppers, some okra and a couple of cucumbers to incorporate into their menu. D Café used some cucumbers for their menu as well, and additional cucumbers were given away to a neighbor on South Gordon Street. Talk about truly local garden-to-table for our Westview restaurants!

Please join community members at the Westview Community Garden (1439 S. Gordon Street) every Saturday from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

2014 Westview Summer Solstice Celebration

Westview Summer Solstice Celebration 2014 Photos

The 7th annual Westview Summer Solstice Celebration took place on Muse Street, adjacent to the Atlanta BeltLine, and featured a grill-off competition between southwest Atlanta neighborhoods and businesses, vendors, music, and a celebration of life service for the late community activist John Perdew.

Eleven grillers battled it out for the title of “Best Pork” and “Best Chicken.” The neighborhoods that were represented included Adair Park, Beecher-Donnelly, Capitol View, Mechanicsville, two West End entries, and five Westview entries. The title of “Best Pork” went to the Adair Park neighborhood, and the title for “Best Chicken” went to last-minute write-in contestant 1600 from the Westview neighborhood.

Unfortunately 2014 marked the first year the festival would experience rain in its seven year course. While the crowds diminished during the rain, those that stayed seemed to have just of a good time as any year, and all participants expressed excitement for next year’s festivities.

Thank you to all the visitors who came out to enjoy the event, the sponsors that helped make the event possible, the grillers that battled it out for the best food, the vendors who sold a diversity of items, and last, but not least, the crew that put the event together! See you next year!

Park Pride Community Garden Tour

Park Pride Community Garden Tour Photos

On a hot summer day the Park Pride sponsored Community Garden Tour stopped by the Westview Community Garden on South Gordon Street to check out how Westview’s garden is set up. During the whirlwind half hour visit members of the community explained the history of the garden, and that the communal garden was started from seeds in thanks to a grant from Seed Savers Exchange. Before taking off tour members and community members were treated to King of Pop popsicles.

Garden Planting & Shed Construction

May 10, 2014

On Saturday, May 10th, community members came back together to continue work at the Westview Community Garden. Additional beds were prepared, kids received instructions on how to put plants in the ground, and construction-oriented neighbors continued work on the shed by adding a gutter to collect rain water. Also notice the still-in-progress artwork on the shed wall!

Community Garden Spring Planting Photos

After a cold and long winter the night time temperatures have finally become mild enough to plant the seedlings in the community garden. And so young and old joined together to mow, till ground beds, and to start planting the first tomatoes, okra, bush beans, and peppers in the raised beds. The work is not done, but we’re excited to finally have the first set of plants in the ground!
